十六強第一場賽事，就纏鬥到12碼大戰，最終地主巴西頂住壓力，以3：2（1：1）淘汰智利，搶下八強門票。

此役獲勝後，巴西第三次（1962、1998）在淘汰賽階段擊敗智利，隊史在世界盃還未輸過智利，兩隊隊史國際賽交手記錄為49勝13和7敗，巴西遙遙領先。

巴西在這場比賽先馳得點，Neymar第18分鐘開角球，吊到門前David Luiz 上前一腳打進，巴西1：0領先。

智利靠Alexis Sánchez第32分鐘扳平戰局，跟著雙方一路纏鬥至延長賽，第120分鐘智利原有致勝一擊機會，結果Mauricio Pinilla射中橫樑，巴西最後一波進攻未果，雙方12碼分勝負。

巴西門將Júlio César擋下智利前兩球，不過隊友未能掌握機會，智利追成2：2，Neymar罰進關鍵第5點，Gonzalo Jara射中右門柱，宣告智利淘汰。
